A Clinical Observation of 80 Chest Injuries


Abstract
This study is a clinical observation of 80 cases of chest injuries treated at the department of surgery, Choong Nam National University Hospital during the period of 5 years from April 1969 to March 1974.
The results were as follows:
1) The sex distribution was 65 males (81.25%) and 15 females (18.75%).
2) Among 80 cases 39 cases (48.75%)¢¥were non-penetrating injuries and 411 cases (51.25%) penetrating injuries.
3) Hemopnemothorax was observed in 78.75% of the total cases. Etiological distribution revealed 39.68% due to nonpenetrating injury and 60.32% penetrating injury.
4) The most common symptoms were dyspnea and chest pain.
5) Associated injuries of the other organs excluding bone were found in 28 cases and the most common injury was brain damage. Bone fracture was found in 48 cases and rib fracture was the most frequently encountered.
6) Conservative therapy was performed in 14 cases. Closed thoracotomy and thoracentesis were performed in 55 cases and 8 cases, respectively. Open thoracotomy was however, mandatory on 3 cases.
7) There were non-fatal complication in 20 cases (25%) and wound infections were the most frequently encountered.
8) There were 3 deaths, a mortality of 3.8%. Of the patients who succumb 2 were due to brain damage and 1 shock.
9) 43 patients were discharged within 2 weeks of admission.
